Biography :

Eductaed at Uppingham School, David Samworth held a National Service commission in The Royal Leicestershire Regiment 1955-56, serving in 1st Bn in The Sudan (he was for a time ADC to the Governor-General) and in Cyprus. He subsequently trained at the Harvard Business School (USA). He became Chairman and Chief Executive of Samworth Brothers, the leading food manufacturing company, stepping down in 2005. He set up the Samworth Charitable Trust and was appointed chairman of the Government's Meat & Livestock Commission, for which he was awarded the C.B.E. (Civil) for services to food and meat marketing (L.G 15.6.1985). He became a Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire in 1984 and was High Sheriff of the county in 1997-98. He was Chairman of Trustees of Uppingham School 1996-2000. Working with the Bishop of Leicester he helped to set up the first ‘Samworth Enterprise Academy’ in 2007, replacing a failed state school in a deprived part of Leicester, and this was followed by the establishment of two further Academies in Nottingham and Mansfield. His charity work has extended to Africa, where he supports a range of activities, including the ‘Mango Tree’ project which looks after a large number of AIDS orphans. He was a Master of Foxhounds and Chairman of the Cottesmore Hunt. For his charitable work he was created a Knight Bachelor in 2009 (L.G. 12.6.2009).
