Biography :
'Vic' Roussel carried out teacher training at Culham College 1937-39. He joined The Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1940, was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment on 4.7.1940, and was a founder member of 50th Holding Battalion, which became 8th Bn and in May 1942 1st Battalion. Promoted Temporary Captain 10.7.1941. Served in 1st Bn in England and in North West Europe. He was wounded in Normandy in 1944. He was awarded the M.C. for his actions as a Company Commander at Wuustwezel, Belgium, on 21.10.1944 (L.G 1.3.1945). In May 945 he was attached to the training staff of a Holding Battalion. After the war he was headmaster of John Rankin School (Newbury) 1955-82, and was twice President of the National Headteachers' Association. He was also a violinist and a chorister, and an ALCM (Associate of the London College of Music). In 2005 he represented the Regiment at a special service at Westminster Abbey commemorating 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. He died in 2008, aged 89 years.
