Biography :
George Rose served In 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment from about 1903, was appointed Unpaid Lance Corporal on 13.5.1905, and was awarded his first Good Conduct Badge in 1906. He later served in 2nd Bn during World War One in India, France, Mesopotamia, Egypt and Palestine with the 2nd Bn . Appointed Company Sergeant Major 15.1.1916. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (L.G. 20.10.1916 "For conspicuous gallantry and ability on many occasions during the campaign, and until seriously wounded in action. On that occassion his bravery and fine example, under extremely heavy rifle and machine gun-fire, he rendered invaluable assistance to his CO, and inspired confidence in the ranks at a very critical period."). Awarded a Mention in Despatches for service in Palestine 19.9.1918-31.1.1919 (L.G. 5.6.1919). He was RSM of 2nd Bn in India from 1919-24. Awarded Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Discharged 25.1.1924. He was a founder-member of the London Branch of the Royal Tigers’ Association and was Chairman for several years; he presented the Box and Gavel to the Branch. Awarded the 1939-1945 Defence Medal for his service in World War Two. He had both his legs amputated in the year before his death in 1959, aged about 75 years.
His medals are in the care of Leicester City Museums Service.
