On 11th December 2025, a headstone for Alfred John Robbins was unveiled in Wigston Cemetery.
At the age of 19, Alfred enlisted with the Leicestershire Regiment and saw 18 years active army service in South Africa and India. In 1914, he once again enlisted with the Leicester Regiment and was later
transferred to the Nottingham & Derbyshire Regiment and was wounded in March 1915 during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle.
During the latter stages of his life, Alfred lived in the Elizabeth Clarke Alms houses, Long Street, Wigston, and was Secretary of the Leicestershire and Rutland branch of the South African War Veterans Association, organising many veterans' parades. He died aged 80 in September 1957 and was buried in Wigston Cemetery.
Elaine French, from the Greater Wigston Historical Society & Heritage Centre discovered, whilst researching Boer War soldiers’ records, that Alfred's grave in Wigston Cemetery did not have a headstone and in October 2024 a Go Fund Me page was set up to purchase a headstone.
