Biography :

John Queenan initially served as Pte 8267 in 3rd Bn The King's Royal Rifle Corps, entering France on 26.9.1914. He was transferred to 2nd Bn The Leicestershire Regiment on 26.12.1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for action in Mesopotamia (L.G. 15.4.1916: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of stretcher-bearers. He worked for forty-eight hours practically without and frequently under heavy fire.”).
He died in 1973, aged 83 years.
His Distinguished Conduct Medal and other Great War medals are in the collection of the Museums Service as are his two identity tags, and two ribbon bars and documents.
