Biography :
Charles Quarmby was a Plumber, Gas Fitter and Glazier by trade and worked for his Father’s firm of R C Quarmby, based in Guthlaxton Street, Leicester. He enlisted in Leicester into 1st Volunteer Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment in 1908, as a Bandsman (playing the Piccolo and Flute). He joined 4th Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment (Territorial Force) when it was formed that year. During World War One, he served in 1/4th Bn in France and Flanders as a stretcher-bearer. He married in 1917 (photo). He was awarded the Military Medal for his action in late September 1918 whilst at St Quentin Canal, near Bellenglise, France. (L.G. 14.5.1919).
On being discharged in 1919 he returned to his trade as a Gas Fitter, and work for Leicester Corporation Gas Department. At some stage he joined the Band of The Leicestershire Yeomanry (TA), a horsed cavalry regiment. In 1939 he was called up again at the outbreak of World War Two. Being 50 years old when The Leicestershire Yeomanry was converted to a Field Gun Regiment Royal Artillery in April 1940, he was discharged as being too old to retrain for active service.
He died in 1981, aged 91 years.
