Preston, Peter McHugh - MBE TD

Biography :
Educated at Oakham School, Peter Preston was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment in 1938, aged 18, and served in 5th Bn (TA). Transferred to Royal Engineers shortly after outbreak of World War Two, and served in Airfield Construction in the BEF in France and Belgium and in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was awarded the M.B.E. for his work in 69 Airfield Construction Group RE, particularly in Italy (L.G. 13.12.1945). On the re-formation of the TA in 1947, he rejoined the 5th Bn (TA). Awarded T.D. and 1st clasp. After a period as 2IC, he was CO of 5th Bn TA) from August 1956-August 1959.
In civilian life he worked in the quarrying industry, in Cliffe Hill Granite Company and Mid-Norfolk Granite Company, joining the Board of Directors in 1951, becoming Managing Director in 1954 and Chairman in 1960. He was a member of The Institute of Quarrying, The Granite Guild, The British Granite & Whinstone Federation (of which he was Vice-Chairman from May 1962). He was a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Paviors and a member of the Holmes masonic Lodge. He died at his home on 4.5.1963, aged 42.
