Plant, John

Biography :

John Plant enlisted in February 1841, aged 18. His early service in 17th Foot included India. He later served in the Crimean War and was awarded the Crimea Medal (clasp Sebastopol). He was also awarded the French Légion d'Honneur (L.G. 4.8.1856) in 1855 for leading out a party of men under very heavy fire and bringing in the body of a colleague who had been killed. He ended his regular military career as a Drill Instructor in the 3rd Cambridge University Rifle Volunteers, was discharged in February 1862 and was appointed to the Yeoman of the Guard in 1866. He was awarded the Jubilee Medal in 1887 and died in August of the following year, aged 69 years.
