Biography :
Bert Pickard enlisted in The Leicestershire Regiment on 30.7.1907 and served as a Private in 2nd Battalion in India, being awarded 3rd Class Certificate of Education in 1908. Granted Proficiency Pay Class I in 1914. In 2nd Bn he entered France on 20.10.1914. He later served with the 1st Battalion and as a Private he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (L.G. 15.9.1915: "For conspicuous gallantry on 9th August 1915, at Hooge. While returning from delivering bombs to the firing line, he found a comrade who had been severely wounded. He remained with him dressing his wounds under a heavy shell fire, and carried him nearly 100 yards to some Artillery dugouts, where he received medical attention."). At some point in this period he was an Acting Sergeant. He was discharged on 13.3.1919 under King's Regulations 392 xvi(a) (i.e. Surplus to military requirements (having suffered impairment since entry into the service)).
He died in 1972, aged 81 years.
