Biography :

Harold Payne served in 8th Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment during World War One, entering France on 29.7.1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal as an Sergeant (Acting CSM) (London Gazette 30.10.1918: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He was taken prisoner, but and reported at battalion headquarters. During the following days he worked continuously without rest in collecting and reorganising troops of several units who had been driven back by the enemy."). Discharged 20.3.1919. He died in 1971. His D.C.M. and World War One campaign medals are in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
