Biography :
Alfred Newland was commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment in May 1941. Served with the 1st Bn in Malaya and became a POW. Awarded the M.C. for gallantry and leadership at the battle of Kampar 2/3/Jan 1942 (L.G. 13.12.1945). He was released from prisoner of war camp in Thailand in Aug 1945. He was invested with his Military Cross in December 1946. He relinquished his commission on account of disability on 1.4.1947, and was granted the hon. rank of Lieutenant. He died in 1973.
