Biography :

Enlisted at Leicester, 12.8.1902. William Henry was a LCpl was serving in E Coy 2nd Leicesters in India in 1907. That year he qualified at the School of Signals at Poona and became a Regimental Signaller. In 1908 he passed for promotion to Cpl, and in 1909 passed a course of instruction on field telephones at the School of Signals at Poona. Transferred to the Army Reserve, 11.8.1910. Re-engaged 23.2.1914 into the 1st Bn in England. Moved via France to Belgium with 1st Bn in Oct 1914, and was Killed in Action at Rue de Bois near Le Quesne in Flanders on 25.10.1914, age 35. Awarded the D.C.M. (see London Gazette, 17.12.1914, p. 10787 "For gallantry on 25th October in the engagement at the railway crossing near the factory south of Rue de Bois.").

He is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial, Comines-Warneton, Belgium and on the Leeds Town Hall Memorial, Yorkshire.
