Biography :

An orphan taken under the wings of the Howard family (of Castle Howard, North Yorkshire) James Mitchell worked in the estate office as a Clerk of Arms. He served in The Royal Fusiliers as LCpl 8489. Commissioned temp 2Lt in The Leicestershire Regiment on 21.1.1916, was posted to 7th Bn in France on 17.7.1916. Was subsequently promoted up to the rank of A/Captain. Whilst at the front line at Hohenzollern Redoubt on the Loos battlefield, he died of injuries on 16.3.1917, aged 28, when somebody dropped a live grenade in the trench on 15.3.1917. He is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
