Biography :

Commissioned into The Leicestershire Regiment 9.3.1940. Initially served in 1/5th Bn and thence to 2nd Leicesters. Wounded and captured in Crete in 1941 he escaped captivity twice. Having been charged with spying, the British Government asked the Pope to intervene to prevent his execution, and a request for clemency was made to the Italian authorities. However, the surrender of Italy in 1943 halted the planned execution. After his successful escape, he made his way back to Egypt. Awarded the M.C. (L.G. 26.3.1942). He was given permission to organise prisoner of war escapes from Greece. Later worked with Greek guerrillas. He was awarded the Bar to the M.C. (L.G. 26.3.1944) for gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East. After the war from 1945-46 he was liaison officer to Archbishop Damaskinos during his Regency of Greece, and retired from the Army on 14.11.1946. At the time of his death in early 1952, he was the Balkan correspondent of 'The Times' newspaper.
