Biography :
Educated at Margate College and Dartford Grammar School, Valentine Lloyd enlisted in The Royal Fusiliers on 5.9.1914 and went to France & Flanders with the BEF. Commissioned as 2Lt into 3rd Bn The Leicestershire Regiment on 26.9.1916. Served in 6th (Service) Bn in 110th Brigade. Promoted Lt on 26.3.1918, and killed in action near Ovillers on 23.10.1918, age 23. Awarded the M.C. for service in 6th Bn in France near Wallincourt "for fine work and bravery in the field 8 October 1918" (L.G. 18.2.1919).
On his death his Colonel wrote, "He had gained enormous popularity with all the officers and men. He set a fine example to us all by his cheerfulness, courage and devotion to duty which will never be forgotten." And his Company Commander wrote, "We have lost not only one of the best officers, but also one of the most charming boys it has been my good fortune to meet."
He is buried at Vendegies-au-Boix British Cemetery (east of Cambrai), Nord, France.
