Biography :

Ernest Laxton joined The Leicestershire Regiment in 1906. Served with 1st Bn at Shornecliffe and then to the Depot from 1911, becoming Officers’ Mess Sergeant (promoted LSgt on 24.2.1911). Posted to 3rd Bn in 1914 and on 1.4.1915 to the 1st Bn in France. Awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the Ypres Salient (London Gazette 27.10.1916). After WW1 he re-enlisted on 4.2.1919, aged 34. After a period of service as an Instructor in the Northern Command Infantry School he was again appointed Officers’ Mess Sergeant, first at the Depot, and then with the lst Battalion, an appointment he held until his retirement on 20.4.1927 with a pension of 44d a day for life. On his retirement he went to Epsom College as Butler, a position he occupied for 17 years. He died in 1949, aged 63 years. His sergeant's cane is in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
