Biography :
William Kitchen made 6 appearances for Leicester FC's 1st XV in 1909/10. He served in 1st Bn The Leicestershire Regiment from about 1905, being promoted LCpl by 1907. The sporting medals awarded to him in 1907, 1911 and 1912 (Army Rugby Cup), are in the collection of Leicester Arts & Museums Service. In rugby he played mostly at full back. In World War One he entered France in 1st Bn on 9.9.1914, and reached the rank of CSgt, He later served as CSgt 606733 in the Labour Corps. He was awarded the trio of War Medals. He later served in World War Two and was awarded the Defence Medal, which is also in the LAMS collection. The photograph is taken from that of the 1st Bn Army Rugby Cup Team of 1907.
