Enlisted at Mountsorrel, Leicestershire. Served with 1/5th Bn in World War One. Killed in action France and Flanders campaign 6.1.1918. He is buried at Cambrin Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Served as a runner with the 1/5th battalion WWI.

Born 17.4.1892 at Walton-on-the-Wolds - son of James Kirkby - Waggoner (agricultural) & Hannah Kirkby, formerly Hames. Married at All Saints' Church, Cossington 21.11.1916 when occupation showed Private in Leicester Regiment. on 21.11.1916. The service was conducted by The Rector H Stewart. Occupation of bridegroom is shown as Private in 5th Leicester Regiment. Fathers: James Kirkby Farmer and Samuel Bishop, Stone Mason. Witnesses: William Wallis & Gladys Isabel Kirkby.

Marriage Certificate: Harold Kirkby - age 24 & Alice Bishop age 26 were married in The Parish Church of Cossington.
