Keeler, Stephen

Biography :

Stephen Keeler enlisted at Chatham, Kent, 22.5.1847, aged 17. Service in 17th Regiment included England, Ireland, Gibraltar, Crimea and Canada. He served in the Crimea War in 1854-56 and was present at the siege of Sebastopol 1854 to 1855 including the assaults on the great Redan; he also took part in the bombardment and surrender of the fortress of Kinburn. Promoted Corporal in 1856. He later served in Canada from 1856 to 1865. He was honourably discharged from the 17th in 1868 having served 21 years. He was subsequently on the permanent staff of the Sussex Militia. Total service was 41years and 65 days. He died in 1903, aged 74 years.
Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Edward VII). This medal is in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
