Biography :

Educated at Beeston Fields School in Notts, aged 17 'Jimmy' Jenks enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters in 1947. He served in 1st Bn The Royal Leicestershire Regiment in Hong Kong and Korea, where he was awarded the Military Medal for his actions as a Section Commander in B Coy 15 Nov-20 Dec 1951 (L.G. 29.4.1952). He served at the Depot in 1956, and from 1956-58 was a CQMS and CSM in 1st R Leicesters in Cyprus, playing in the rugby and waterpolo teams. He was CSM Training Company in Plymouth and of C Coy in Meunster. In 1961-62 he was WO on the Recruiting Team in Leicestershire. In 1963 he was temporarily RSM of 7th R Warwick (TA) and in August 1963 he became RSM of Depot The East Anglian Brigade at Bury St Edmunds, and in 1965 became RSM 4th R Anglian in Aden, where his football team won the Middle East Cup. He served in that capacity in Watchet and in Malta, where his football team reached the final of the Army UK Cup in 1966. He was granted a Short Service Commission in 1967 and awarded the M.B.E. (L.G. 8.6.1968). After being MTO in Malta, Gillingham and Bahrain, he was granted a QM Commission on 22.6.1970 and on the disbandment of 4th R Anglian that year he moved (with the bulk of 'his' football team) to 3rd R Anglian, in which they won the Infantry Cup. He served three operational tours in Northern Ireland as Quartermaster of that Bn, and later served on the 'Q' Ops staff in HQ Northern Ireland. After a final tour in Berlin, he was promoted Lt Col QM on 6.4.1979 and became QM of the Cadet Training Centre at Frimley Park, becoming Lt Col (Staff QM) on 11.9.1979. He retired on 1.9.1984.
