Albert Medal

Albert Medal

Named in memory of the Prince Consort who died in 1861, this series of medals was instituted for gallantry in saving life at sea. In 1877 it was extended to saving life on land. It is rare, as only 70 gold and 501 bronze medals have ever been awarded. In 1971 it was replaced by the George Cross.
