Biography :
Born Leicester 26.9.1891. Enlisted Leicester 10.8.1914 and served with the 2nd Bn in World War One. Wounded 16.6.1915, and rejoined Bn 26.9.1915. Appointed Unpaid Lance Corporal 19.5.1915, Corporal 25.9.1915, Paid Lance Sergeant 27.11.1915 and 10.1.1916. Wounded 8-10th March 1916 whilst serving at Dujaila Redoubt in Mesopotamia, and sent to hospital in India. He was one of 16 members of 2nd Bn “brought to special notice” by Lt Gen P Lake, commanding Indian Expeditionary Force ‘D’, Basrah, for operations in Mesopotamia 19 Jan-16 Apr 1916 (L.G. 19.10.1916). Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal ' For conspicuous gallantry and ability in leading his platoon forward in an attack after his officer had wounded. His invariable courage and coolness under the heaviest fire set a fine example to all ranks with him' (L.G. 20.10.1916). Later attached to 3/4th Wiltshire Regiment. Discharged 4.9.1918, aged 26. His First World War medals and in the collection of Leicester City Museums Service.
