Biography :
Was serving as Private with the 2nd Bn as at 11.11.1905, and was still serving in 1912. As Corporal he was awarded the Military Medal during World War One. (See London Gazette 27.10.1916 page 10482). Re-enlisted in 1919 with number 4850656. In 1924 was discharged in the rank of Sergeant.
Further Information from a private source: "At some time Newcombe arrived in Australia with his wife Lilian. 'He enlisted in the Australian Army on 5.8.1940 at Bayswater W.A. and was discharged on 1.5.1943 from 3rd Bn Depot. For his service he was given the War Medal and Australian Service medal both inscribed W29349. He was also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with KGVI head on the obverse and with the inscription T830858 Sgt S. Newcombe MM Leicester Regt. So his medals are Military Medal WWI service and Victory WW2 war medal and Austservice medal Long Service and Good conduct medal KGV head and MSM as described. I think it is unique that the msm has imprinted MM on the side but it is all official."
